Jones County, Mississippi was created in 1826, from Covington and Wayne Counties. In 1865 the name of the county was changed to Jefferson County. However, in 1868 during the Constitutional Convention the name of Jones was reinstated. Jones County is named after John Paul Jones, a naval hero in the American Revolutionary War. Jones County has two county seats, Ellisville (First District) and Laurel (Second District).
