AN ACT to divide the county of Jones into two Circuit and Chancery Court Districts, and to fix the jurisdiction of the courts, and to provide for holding same in each district, and to locate the county seat in the Second District thereof, and to provide for the building of a courthouse and jail therein, and for the transcribing of all muniments of title of lands lying within the Second District of said county, and to provide for the payment of all expenses incurred in carrying out the provisions of this Act.
New Court District created in Jones County.
SECTION i. Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Mississippi, That for the purpose of creating two Circuit and Chancery
Court Districts in the county of Jones, said county shall be divided into two districts, to be called the First and Second Circuit
and Chancery Court Districts of Jones County; and the Circuit Court for the First District thereof shall be held at the courthouse
in the town of Ellisville, said county, on such days and for such times as the Legislature may from time to time provide. The Circuit
Court for the Second District of said county be held at the courthouse or such other place as the Board of Supervisors may
select in the city of Laurel, on the first Monday of May and continue twelve days, and on the first Monday of November and continue
twelve days. The Chancery Court for the First District of said county be held at the courthouse in the town of Ellisville, in said county, on such day and for such time as the Legislature shall from time to time provide ; and the Chancery Court of the Second District of said county shall be held in the city of Laurel, in said county, at the courthouse therein, or such other place as the Board of Supervisors may provide, on the third Monday of January and the third Monday of July, and continue twelve days. SEC. 2. The following territory shall constitute and comprise the said Second District of Jones County, to wit: All that portion of the present county of Jones lying north of a line beginning at the northeast corner of Section 25, in Township 8, north, of Range 10, west, on the present boundary line between the county of Jones and the county of Wayne, and running thence west along section lines to the northwest corner of Section 27, Township 8, north, of Range 14, west, on the boundary line between the county of Jones and the county of Covington. And all that territory in the present county of Jones lying south of said line shall comprise and constitute the First District of Jones County. Sheriff to keep an office in each district.
